What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization, Explained in Plain English

September 28, 2026

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the practice of making your business visible inside the answers that AI systems generate. Where SEO targets search engines that return links, GEO targets engines that write responses — and increasingly, those responses are where buying decisions start.

Why a new discipline at all

When someone asks an AI assistant "who should I hire for X" or "what's the best way to solve Y," the assistant doesn't show ten blue links. It composes an answer, names a handful of sources or providers, and most people never look further. Visibility inside that composed answer follows different rules than ranking — so a distinct practice grew around it. GEO, AEO (answer engine optimization), and AI SEO all describe substantially the same work.

What the work actually involves

Question mapping. Cataloguing what your buyers actually ask assistants — the phrasings, the comparisons, the "is it worth it" questions — because those are the surfaces you're optimizing for.

Liftable answers. Publishing content that resolves those questions directly and clearly enough that a machine can quote or summarize it faithfully. Structure helps: real headings, question-shaped sections, first-paragraph answers.

Entity consistency. Making sure your business reads identically everywhere machines look — site, profiles, directories, maps. You are, to an AI system, the sum of everything written about you; GEO tightens that sum into one coherent story.

Corroboration building. Earning third-party mentions, listings, and coverage, because generative engines lean on independent validation before naming names.

Measurement. Actually asking the assistants your mapped questions on a schedule, recording who gets named, and tracking movement — the GEO equivalent of rank tracking.

Who needs it, honestly

Any business whose customers research before buying — which is nearly every service business, agency, practice, and B2B company. The categories where assistants already recommend providers by name are the categories where the window is open right now: early, consistent footprints are being locked in while most competitors haven't started.
