The DIY Social Media Audit: 10 Questions That Reveal Everything

September 4, 2026

Before changing anything about your social media, diagnose it. This is the audit we'd run on your accounts — turned into ten questions you can answer yourself in an afternoon. Answer them honestly; the pattern that emerges is your strategy's to-do list.

1. If a stranger saw only your last nine posts, would they know what you sell and why you're good at it? Open your profile grid and look. Most feeds fail this — busy but unclear.

2. When did you last post, and is there any rhythm? Consistency is the first trust signal audiences and algorithms both read. Gaps and bursts tell everyone the channel isn't really owned.

3. What share of your recent content is video? Whatever the number, ask whether it reflects a decision or a limitation — because platforms are deciding for you either way.

4. Do your posts get replies, or just reactions? Comments, shares, and saves signal content that matters to people. A feed of quiet likes is polite indifference.

5. Does anyone respond to comments, messages, and reviews — and how fast? Check your own inboxes. Unanswered messages are unanswered customers, in public.

6. Which three posts performed best this year — and can you say why? If nobody can explain the wins, nobody can repeat them. That explanation is the beginning of strategy.

7. Does each platform you're on have a distinct job? Name the role of each channel in one sentence. Platforms without a job produce content without a purpose.

8. What happens when someone interested clicks through? Follow your own links. Broken paths, dead landing pages, and profiles pointing nowhere waste every good post upstream.

9. How does your presence compare to the three competitors your customers also see? Not follower counts — craft, consistency, and clarity, side by side on a phone.

10. Is anything here connected to a business number? Leads, bookings, sales, hires — something. Social that connects to nothing will always be the first budget cut, and it'll deserve it.

Scoring it

There's no points system — the audit works by pattern. Clustered failures on questions 1–4 mean a content problem. On 5, an operations problem. On 6–7, a strategy problem. On 8–10, a measurement problem. Most accounts have exactly one dominant cluster, and fixing that one changes everything downstream.

If you'd rather have professional eyes run this — with the competitive pull and the fix list included — that's precisely what the free social media audit is.
